Synopsis

In 2008, Yann le Jours was a dancer and choreographer. That year, on 8 March, he presented a dance show in Porto on the stage of the Serralves Foundation. A few minutes before entering stage, Yann is informed that his father has just died. That evening, the show was presented in front of 300 spectators and captured by 3 cameras.
Based on a video archive of this performance, Yann explores the text/context relationship and the subjective part of the act of translation to narrate this event where the real time of the stage coincides with the beginning of a mourning, the end of a career and the birth of another one.

En 2008, Yann les Jours est danseur et chorégraphe. Il présente un spectacle de danse à Porto sur la scène de la fondation Serralves. Quelques minutes avant d'entrer sur scène, Yann est informé que son père vient de décéder. Ce soir là, le spectacle a été présenté devant 300 spectateurs et capté par 3 caméras.
A partir d'une archive vidéo de cette performance, Yann explore la relation texte/contexte, le rapport de la traduction à l’interprétation, pour narrer cet événement où se croisent le temps réel de la scène, le début d’un deuil, la fin d’une carrière et la naissance d’une autre.

Director statement

This film is based on a 27 min documentation of a 27 min performance.
I wanted to confront this real time document to the 14 year long story it sparkeld. Taking the sound and the image of those 27min of my life and using it as landscape for telling a story that started there, during my last appearance on stage, and finished 14 years later for the screening of my first film.
This film is a lot about techical conventions and the problematics related to subtitles and translations : how to use subtitles, how and what to translate when a text must follow a voice, an image,what to translate when the dialogues are not as interesting as the story itself ?
it's also a lot about social conventions : how to allow and use social exposure in one of the deepest dire of human existence : the loss of a father?how to fail safely? what to keep from what a crisis reveals in order to overcome it?
This films asks a lot of questions but will only answer by simply existing the way it was made.
Ultimately I could say that this film is about family : The family we grew up with, that raised and educated us and that other family, equally precious, the one that adopted us all along our lifetime. That experimental documentary is about love and family. 

Ce film est basé sur une documentation de 27 minutes d'une performance de 27 minutes.
J'ai voulu confronter ce document en temps réel à l'histoire de 14 ans qu'il a suscitée. Prendre le son et l'image de ces 27 minutes de ma vie et les utiliser comme paysage pour raconter une histoire qui a commencé là, lors de ma dernière apparition sur scène, et s'est achevée 14 ans plus tard pour la projection de mon premier film.
Ce film aborde beaucoup les conventions techniques et les problématiques liées aux sous-titres et aux traductions : comment utiliser les sous-titres ? Comment et quoi traduire lorsqu'un texte doit suivre une voix, une image ? Que traduire lorsque les dialogues ne sont pas aussi intéressants que l'histoire elle-même ?
Il aborde aussi beaucoup les conventions sociales : comment permettre et utiliser l'exposition sociale dans l'une des situations les plus difficiles de l'existence humaine : la perte d'un père ? Comment échouer en toute sécurité ? Que cacher de ce qu'une crise révèle pour la surmonter ?
Ce film pose de nombreuses questions, mais ne trouvera de réponses que par la simple existence telle qu'elle a été réalisée.
En fin de compte, je pourrais dire que ce film parle de famille : la famille avec laquelle nous avons grandi, qui nous a élevés et éduqués, et cette autre famille, tout aussi précieuse, celle qui nous a adoptés tout au long de notre vie. Ce documentaire expérimental parle d'amour et de famille.
